Journey To Fish Canyon Narrows – Saga 1 of 2

beautiful sunset through the windshield of a car on the driver's side

The beautiful, seemingly iridescent sky was brought to you by my iPhone on Templin Highway. This is a long winding road that leads up to a DWP (Department of Water and Power) center BUT also to the start of a trail known as Fish Canyon Narrows. ( 34.602194, -118.670722 )

This whole little mini trip started when I asked one of my best friends to hang out. I honestly just wanted to park somewhere along the road and stargaze. Soak in the night sky and just vibe.

About half an hour before we met he found this trail and insisted on going. Being nonconfrontational – go with the flow type of hoe I am I said yes, fuck it. So we quickly packed our items and headed out.

Of course, he was well prepared with level 1 trauma kits and survival medical supplies in case… I don’t know… I NEED SURGERY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WILDERNESS?!

I, on the other hand, packed real essentials like a pen and post-its to write notes. Pepper spray for any potential attackers and obviously my polaroid camera.

The hiking trail is roughly 40 minutes from Silver Lake in Los Angeles. Because of COVID-19, we assumed the trail has been free to grow wild for months now. Adding to that already scary thought we were arriving at the trail at about 7:30PM.

Getting off the 5 freeway on Templin Hwy we passed an intersection with Old Ridge Route. No other cars in sight. Eventually, we did arrive at the blocked-off path up to the trail (photos below). At this point, the sun had started to set and we still hadn’t seen another soul.

I’ve been having a really tough time coping with my own traumas – I did NOT want to add a towed or broken into car to my list. So we got out of the car and really debated whether it was a good idea to leave my car on an abandoned road right in front of DWP.

We chilled and ate subs we got at Walmart while we thought this through. Eventually, we decided to go off on a small scouting hike to see what we could find. We ended up finding an old dragon urn that was cracked next to what seemed like burned trash.

NOPE.

I will NOT be adding cursed objects to my collection. So at this point, we decided to drive around and stop at various places to see the sunset. At each stop, we were able to see a different angle of the sunset as it lay across the mountainsides. It was all breathtaking and a time well spent with a really good friend.

I made this into a saga because after scouting the surrounding area and doing a little bit more research I feel confident in finishing the hike. I was nervous to leave my car alone on an empty road. Especially at night! So the plan is to hopefully go back during the day.

So make sure you stick around to hear more about the journey to Fish Canyon Narrows! (More photos too!)
